By Air : Cochin international Airport located at Nedumbassery, 20 km away from Cochin has a direct link with the major airports in India and around the world. There are regular flights to the metro cities and other major cities in India like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai Goa, Bangalore and to many nearby countries. By Train : Cochin has three main railway stations, namely Ernakulam Junction(South stations), Ernakulam Town (North stations) and Harbor Terminus on Willingdon Island. By rail, Kochi is linked with all important cities of India like Delhi, Mumbai, Banglore, Chennai, Calcutta, Hydrabad. One of the best ways to reach Cochin by Train is to take the Konkan Railway train from Mumbai, it passes through the Konkan coast. The train traveling provides the breathtaking scenery and the natural beauty of the terrain that the train passes through.
By Road : Cochin, being an important commercial center of Kerala is very well connected and serviced with all major cities and tourist places by a network of National highways (NH) and state highways. Three important National Highways pass through or start from Kochi, NH 47 from Kanyakumari to Salem go by the heart of Kochi while NH 17 to Mumbai and NH 49 to Madurai(in Tamil Nadu) starts from Kochi. Cochin is easily accessible from all parts of Kerala, Kerala Road Transport Corporation (K.S.R.T.C.) operating buses from different part to Ernakulam or Cochin. There is a daily services between other major cities in South India by road including Mumbai, Bangalore(12 hrs), Mangalore (12 hrs), Coimbatore (4.5 hrs) and Chennai (14 hrs). These services are operated by both private operators and by the respective State Transport Authorities. The private buses provides better comfort, are cleaner and more modern, and also more expensive compared to others, the fare on a private operator run bus, especially an A/C Volvo bus, is costlier than a 3-AC train ticket. Cochin is 64 km from Alappuzha, 78 km from Kottayam, 190 km from Periyar, 223 km from Trivandrum, 312 km from Ooty and 565 km from Bangalore.
By boat / Ship : Cochin can be reached by sea in yachts or by occasional cruise ship from Goa or Mumbai. Kochi has a magnificent all weather natural port. Regular boat service to places like Kottayam and Alleppey are available through the scenic backwaters of Kerala. Ferries are the best way of getting about between islands. It reaches faster and it is cheaper and much more comfortable and enjoyment than buses or auto rickshaws. There are two ferry stations in Ernakulam. The main Boat Jetty is 1 Km away from the Ernakulam south railway station and the other is near the High Court. There are two Ferry stops in Willingdon Island also; ‘Embarkation’ and ‘Terminus’.
Public Ferries are available every 20 minutes from High Court Jetty (Ernakulam) to Vypeen and Bolghatty islands from 6am to 10pm. There is a vehicular ferry service also available from High Court Jetty to Vypeen jetty. Kerala State Government Ferry service to and fro is available every Half an Hour from Ernakulam Main boat jetty to Mattancherry via Terminus jetty (Willingdon Island) and to Fort Kochi (Customs jetty) via Embarkation jetty (Willingdon Island). The ticket office opens 10 minutes before each sailing. Sail starts from 6am and ends at 9.30 pm.
Travel in Cochin :
Auto Rickshaws : are the three wheel type vehicle, comparitively cheaper than Taxi cars and available in all junctions. Minimum charge upto 1.5 Kms is Rs. 12/- and running charge per km is Rs.6. In Ernakulam, auto-rickshaws are the most convenient mode of transport. There are more than 1000 autos running in the city. Pre-paid auto stands are available at Ernakulam Junction railway station and at Thoppumpady.
Buses : Buses are very frequent and cheap in Cochin. It connects Ernakulam, Willingdon and Fort Kochi and many other places. Minimum charges for upto three stoppage is Re. 3.00 approximately. Now, the Goshree Bridge from Ernakulam that stretches out across the backwaters connecting the islands of Bolghatty, Mulavukadu, Vallarpadam and Vypeen make tourist access much more easier to these Islands.
Hire Boats : Motorised boats of various sizes can be hired from the Sealord jetty or from the small dock adjacent to the Main jetty in Ernakulam. They are an excellent way of exploring Kochi harbour and backwaters at your leisure and without the crowds. Rowboats offer to shuttle between Willingdon Island and Fort Cochin or Mattancherry.
