Vandiperiyar 18 km away from Thekkady, Periyar River flowing through the centre of the town on its way to the Idukki reservoir. Vandipperiyar is a small plantation town with its vast tea, coffee and pepper plantations. Vandipperiyar also a major spice trade centre, There is a number of tea factories at Vandiperiyar. Major plantation groups like RBT, AVT, and Harisson’s Malayalam have tea plantations near Vandiperiyar. The Government Agriculture Farm and Flower Garden have a variety of rose plants, orchids and anthuriam. There is a limited number of accommodation facilities and hotels in Vandiperiyar.
Vandiperiyar is one of the entry point to the famous pilgrim station of South india Sabarimala Ayyappa Temple, is just 29 km from Sabarimala . Vandiperiyar Route to Sabarimala through Kozhikkanam, Pullumedu, Uppupara and Uralkuzhi Theertham. Jeep services and KSRTC (Kerala State Road Transport Corporation) buses from Kumily and Vandiperiyar ply up to Uppupara. The 25 km journey by bus or jeep reaches to Uppupara from Vandiperiyar. From there the Devotees must climb down by foot through Pandithavalam about 4 km to reach Sabarimala Sannidhanam. This is the most convenient route for the pilgrims from Tamil Nadu comming from Kumily – Theni. The Kozhikkanam-Uppupara ghat road cuts through the thick forest patch in the Periyar Tiger Reserve. One has to pass through Vallakadavu and Kozhikkanam to reach Pullumedu. pilgrims can also go from Vandiperiyar to Mount Estate (8 km) by vehicle and then walk to Sabarimala about 12 km.
